GRE考试作为一项标准化考试，一直是获准参加美国研究生课程的关键。
近年来，美国多所大学宣布，部门专业不再强制要求提供GRE成绩。
近日，普林斯顿大学也宣布，14个硕士项目取消GRE要求：
艺术与考古学、古典文学、比较文学、生态学与进化生物学、英语、法语和意大利语、地球科学、分子生物学、音乐作曲 、神经科学、心理学、宗教、斯拉夫语言和文学、西班牙语和葡萄牙语
取消GRE已成为趋势
普林斯顿大学取消14个专业的GRE要求，这对很多学生来说无疑是个好消息。近年来，美国很多院校的部分专业纷纷宣布取消GRE成绩，其中包括哈佛、宾大等美国名校。
2018年，44%的分子生物学博士项目不再要求GRE成绩;在神经科学和生态学专业领域，大约有三分之一的项目在2016-2018年取消了对GRE成绩的要求。
GRE在申请中的影响力在下降，院系依然会用一系列材料和信息来衡量申请人，这些信息包括过往科研经历、个人陈述和推荐信。
如果没有拿得出手的科研、学术表现，没有大牛推荐信，进入名校难度将会增大。

仍有很多院校需要提供GRE成绩
目前不再强制要求提供GRE成绩的院校只是少数，还有很多院校的硕士项目需要提交GRE成绩。

GRE成绩是方便有效的衡量指标
除了GRE成绩之外，院校还可以通过其他材料衡量申请人，包括学生的成绩、过往科研经历、个人陈述和推荐信。但是，这些材料都不如GRE成绩来的直观。
GRE同时也是衡量申请人学术潜力的权威指标，仍然很多院校对申请者综合考量的标准。这也是为什么有很多人对取消GRE成绩持反对意见的原因。
美国的一些大学只是不再强制要求必须提交GRE成绩，GRE成绩会被看做补充性信息的。如果自己的成绩比较好，可以向学校提交GRE成绩，可能会对你有帮助。
